March 2025 Magazine

During these times of presidential provocation and reckless instability, there are voices of reason that prevail in our culture. One person worth noting is Learning Consultant Mike Haykin. Mike has a finely honed set of skills for working with kids and their families. Each young person he encounters is accorded respect and given a chance to thrive. Mike is able to assess what is more likely to work, even when other programs and resources have failed. Special announcement: On March 15th, people will mail Donald Trump a postcard to publicly express their opinions. Take time to send our 47th President a postcard. Let him know how he’s doing. This month, and always, May the luck of the Irish be with you. – Patricia Vaccarino

Mike Haykin Listens to Kids by Patricia Vaccarino What do you do when your child isn’t doing well? Mike has cultivated his knowledge of strategies, techniques, and interventions for over forty-five years. He has seen what works. To some extent, he acts as a matchmaker by drawing among multiple professionals, programs and resources to create the best fit for a kid’s particular situation.

Prepare for March 15th, 2025, #TheIdesofTrump On March 15th, people will mail Donald Trump a postcard to publicly express opposition to him. Featured Book Review: Total Garbage: How We Can Fix Our Waste and Heal Our World by Edward Humes.  Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edward Humes begins with what can only be described as a shock-and-awe sentence in his latest book, called “Total Garbage.” Just chew on this for a moment: “You swallowed,” Humes writes, “285 pieces of plastic today.” – Barbara Lloyd McMichael

The Chip Conspiracy by Patricia Vaccarino is a tongue-in-cheek work of fiction that explains why President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are as thick as thieves. Rumors abound that Putin has got something big on Trump. What could it possibly be?

Will the Center Hold by Annie Searle  I find that it is increasingly difficult to think positively about our country and its place in the world. I have spent the last twenty-five or so years of my career advocating for public-private sector partnerships, which are at the heart of my work in risk management, just as they are absolutely vital for the stature and effectiveness of the U.S. government.

From Sea to Shining Sea is released in March by PR for People Team  Just in time for Women’s History Month, From Sea to Shining Sea, the film about Katharine Lee Bates and Story of America the Beautiful, will have a premiere showing on March 25, 6:30 pm at the Cornerstone Arts Building at Colorado College in Colorado Springs.

Trump’s Oval Office Blowup: a Clashing of Personalities for Resources by Nick J. Licata At the abrupt end of an intended photo-op meeting, Trump noted, “This is going to be great television.” Was it?

Time Marches On by Patricia Vaccarino  As time marches on, there is only one hard truth: the more things change, the more things stay the same.

From My Bookshelf

Aside from writing my own books, articles and essays, I review books I read. This month, I am sharing three books that have “Irish” themes. Edna O’Brien’s Country Girl is a provocative tale about her life and times from rural Ireland to Hollywood. Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt is one of the most harrowing works ever told about the Irish immigrant experience. Fintan O’Toole’s great work We don’t know ourselves: A Personal History of Modern Ireland covers a time in Irish History known as “The Troubles.” Think “The Troubles” could never happen in America? Let’s wait and see.  – Patricia Vaccarino
